Toronto Manual Therapy

What is Manual Therapy?

The cornerstone of our approach to Physiotherapy here at Shawn Williams Physiotherapy, in Toronto, is Hands-on “manual therapy.”

Manual Therapy is defined as “application of an accurately determined and specifically directed manual force to the body, in order to improve mobility in areas that are restricted; in joints, in connective tissues, or in skeletal muscles.”

Skilled manual therapy can make significant immediate improvements in pain, and mobility. This will lead to a speedy recovery.

How do I know where to find a skilled manual therapist in Toronto?

A physiotherapist, who has been FCAMPT certified (Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapy), has completed extensive post graduate training and have attained internationally recognized “hands-on” manipulative therapy. Shawn has obtained this post-secondary education, which requires several years of specialized training in manual therapy and has the FCAMPT designation behind his name.

Why should I not just go to a massage therapist to get manual therapy and treat my condition?

While we fully see the value, and often send patients to massage, physiotherapists are uniquely trained to assess and evaluate the musculoskeletal system and injury. Hands-on techniques are often not very effective, and can be damaging, if they are not guided by a skilled assessment and diagnosis for your condition, which a massage therapist is not trained to complete or legally able to perform.

Every visit a physiotherapist, who is skilled in manual therapy, can do an in-depth reassessment at each visit to make sure that your condition is being resolved. Additionally, physiotherapists can be trained in manipulation which can be a highly effective technique to restore movement and decrease pain when used appropriately. This is a technique that massage therapists are not legally allowed to perform, but can be performed by an FCAMPT physiotherapist. Additionally, manual therapy is most effective when combined with specific exercises aimed at your specific diagnosis. As the research shows, when you combine manual therapy with exercise, you get the best and fastest results.

What our patients say about Manual Therapy…
In June of this year I developed a running injury and couldn’t run for more than 5 minutes without having knee, leg and back pain. Shawn worked with me using various treatments (including manual therapy and dry needling), and tailored an individual stretching, strengthening and running program to help me get back to full strength in a very narrow window. I like that he did not let me stop running completely, but worked me back up to be able to run an 80km ultra trail race after only 3.5 months. He diligently followed up on my progress and was available to give advice when I missed a workout or had any discomfort. His service was very convenient as he came to my home, and I could schedule sessions in the evening and on the weekend. I also appreciate that he showed me how to tape my leg, so I could do it myself when at a race. In conclusion, I was very happy with the service received from Shawn, and would recommend him to others for a professional and convenient service. Anastassia F.

Shawn treated me using manual therapy for Dequervian’s tenosynovitis on my right hand. As a classical pianist, my hands are so important to my career and Shawn has helped me manage the swelling and heal and be able to play for hours at a time again. Jackie L.

I have been seeing Shawn for an ankle injury from soccer, plus knee pain and severe upper back pain and he’s got me back to work and getting me back to playing the sport that I love again! He provides a combination of manual hands on therapy and exercises to do at home. It’s clear that he has a lot of experience. I would recommend any one who hasn’t tried acupuncture and/or dry needling to contact Shawn, he’s great and very professional. Jessica F.
